  • Ukraine Support Network

Ukraine FlagSome QPARA members and other locals who want to support displaced Ukrainians and their hosts in the area have formed a support network to assist and complement what Brent Council and others are doing. It is not restricted to QPARA members. If you wish to get in touch with QPARA’s Ukraine Support Network, please feel free to contact Celia Frank (QPARAUkraine@gmail.com ) or Robin Sharp (robisharp@googlemail.com)

We are very proud to welcome our Ukrainian guests and wanted to offer a short guide for guests and their hosts to help navigate the most important steps in getting settled in the UK. It is not comprehensive but should provide a valuable resource to get things started.

The document will be updated with shared learning as we discover more about the Homes for Ukraine scheme and as hosts and guests feed their experiences back to us.

The most up-to-date version of the document can be downloaded from Dropbox by clicking on the link below. You don’t need a Dropbox account to do this, select the Download option (top left, select down arrow and then Download – this on a PC Browser, other browsers may differ)

  • Call for food donations for local Christmas deliveries

A call out for food donations – a few of the local initiatives are short of donations over the next two weeks, partly because schools have broken up and collections are no longer possible. They are very keen to collect as much pasta, rice, tuna, tinned tomatoes, fruit and veg as possible over the weekend both for parcels on Monday and to share with the Granville for their midweek deliveries. Home pick-up of donations is possible and we will also be around the Farmers Market and 22 Lonsdale Rd on Sunday. More info at bit.ly/helpourhungry

  • Groups report back on donations from QPARA

Mike Cantor reported back to the April monthly meeting on how the donations made by QPARA in 2017 had been spent. In March 2017 we agreed donations of £1,000 to each of the following groups with a connection to the Queen’s Park area:

Brent Action for Refugees to fund tea/social evenings for Syrian refugees in Brent

Brent Centre for Young People to give Adolescent Exploratory Therapy to two young people who live in the Queen’s Park area

Laurence’s Larder to provide food, clothing, washing and drying facilities to refugee asylum seekers in Brent

Our Global School to cover the cost of transporting volunteer school students from Salusbury School and Queen’s Park Community School to a township school in Kayamandi, South Africa

The Promise Foundation to help fund a monthly Skills Club, based in the Queen’s Park Community School to help tackle educational disadvantage in Brent

Salusbury World to help with the funding of a Winter Party for refugee children and to help fund excursions for refugee women and children

Shakespeare in the Squares to help with the costs of a production of Romeo and Juliet in Queen’s Park on 24th June.

Each group provided Mike with a report on how they had used the donations. These can been viewed by clicking here and here.

  • Would you like to help QPARA?

If you would like to become more involved our work to make the Queen’s Park area an even better place than it already is, we would love to see you at our Annual General Meeting (AGM).

    • Meet your neighbours and mingle over a drink and some food before the meeting starts.
    • Put yourself forward to help out in any way that you can, by volunteering practical help, joining action groups, or helping to running our events or meetings.

You can join the Association at the AGM, but you are also welcome to come as a guest.

We look forward to welcoming you on Thursday.
