  • Open GardensWelcome to the Queen’s Park Area Residents’ Association QPARA was set up over 40 years ago by local residents as an entirely voluntary organisation keen to preserve the integrity of the conservation area … and that’s what we still do, but now so much more besides! On this site you can find the exactly who we are and what we do. Whether you want more information on the fantastic events we run each year, or to see what we are doing to help preserve the area we live in, you will find everything in these pages. Recent News A traveling exhibition showing the proposals for the High Speed Rail Link (Hs2) to Birmingham, which could pass under Kilburn Lane, will be in the car park beside Queen’s Park station on Saturday March 26th, from 9 am to 5.30 pm. For more info go to: http://www.hs2.org.uk/. Public consultation on this scheme has now started.

    • Park LiaisonRECENT NEWS Minutes of meeting between Richard Gentry (Park Manager) & John Blandy (QPARA liaison) 10 am on 9/2/11 1. Staff: 4 temps will be appointed for the summer. Ray Brown (a temp) is still covering for apprentice gardener post, some issues with the appointment still need to be resolved. 2. Winter work: Lucy (temporary management trainee) is working with Ian to improving the Mediterranean and Sensory gardens. Work starts next week. The area used by the table tennis courts will be paved with wet pour as the play was wearing the grass. Work will start soon to extend the automatic watering to the Pitch and Putt grounds. Ian has been cutting back the Quiet Garden border, and is just about to cover ground with mulch, reducing the need to weed and help with water retention; the same will be done on the bed in front of the farm. 3. Playground: The Park is still looking for a further £35-40K before they start on phase one of the work. They are awaiting confirmation of bids they have made to make up the shortfall, particularly LAA (Local Area Agreement) where they have applied for £20K. 4. Vegetable plot: Transition Town is…
    • PlanningPLANNING RECENT NEWS There is concern that some residents are trying to erect new high brick garden walls in Queen’s Park. QPARA strongly discourages this, as this scale of walls destroys the architectural integrity of the conservation area. The Islamia School development: the Section 106 agreement is very probably going to be signed by March 11th. This should include details of travel plans and community use of the development. The final decision about the development is expected to be made by the Council Executive in mid April. Just outside our area but of interest: The Maqam Centre www.themaqam.com supported by the Yusuf Islam Foundation and formerly known as the Tiverton Centre has revised its development plans. (Planning application no 10/3199) The owners are trying to find £3.2m (£450,000 raised so far) to open a swimming pool and spa complex on the lower ground floor, with a café, adaptable performance area and gallery housed in the upper levels, all open to the general public. There is no provision for parking. The proposals suggest a spiritual centre embracing Islamic philosophy, but there is no suggestion it will be a place of worship. AIMS QPARA was originally set up to help protect the…
    • Police LiaisonPOLICE We liaise very closely with our local Safer Neighbourhoods Team (SNT) under the supervision of Sergeant Graeme Day. Members of the team usually come to our monthly meetings to keep us up to date on local matters. It is good to report that over the last 12 months crime statistics in the Queen’s Park Area are down. In cases of emergency or spotting something suspicious in your area please call 999 for a real emergency or Tel: Neighbourhood Team 020 8721 2960 email: brentqueenspark.snt@met.police.uk Through the SNT we try to encourage individual streets to set up Neighbourhood Watch schemes. You may even get an discount on your home insurance if you’re a member of one! Are you a cyclist? Keep a look out for the SNT doing free bike security marking at the local Farmers’ Market. They are often there on Sunday mornings or in the park at Sunday lunchtimes near the café. BASIC ADVICE Report crime. Take advantage of free security advice from the Crime Prevention team. Always make sure you lock your doors and windows. Don’t let strangers into your homes. Don’t leave valuables (wide screen TV’s, computers/laptops etc) on display near windows.
