• Invitation to consultation on Brent’s Cultural Strategy RSVP 18th Feb

Brent Council is undertaking a programme of consultation and engagement on a new draft Cultural Strategy:

“The draft strategy and action plan set out proposals to further develop the rich cultural offer which makes Brent an exciting borough to live, work or visit. It proposes a shared vision for the many individuals, organisations and stakeholders involved in the cultural life of Brent, through direct delivery, sponsorship or participation. The objectives of the strategy and the action plan will be closely embedded in the ongoing regeneration of properties and spaces across the borough.

“We would like to invite you or another member of your group to an independently facilitated consultation and engagement event to discuss the draft strategy on Thursday, 25 February from 18:30-20:30 at Stonebridge Hub,6 Hillside, Stonebridge,NW10 8BN.https://hydecommunitycentres.wordpress.com/stonebridge-hillside-community-centre-brent-london/

“This event is also a good opportunity for you to meet with other community organisations in the borough.

“We would be very grateful if would you would confirm attendance by emailing aine.ryan@brent.gov.uk by 5pm on the 18 February.”

If you are a keen gardener or a local artist living in the QPARA area or close to the park, why not open your garden or house (or both!) to the public for Queen’s Park Open Gardens and Studios on Sunday 19th June?

With Spring approaching, there is still time to get your garden in shape or produce that masterpiece, ready for this hugely successful event that has taken place in our area every two years since 1998. Please contact aszalanczi@hotmail.co.uk by 1 March 2016 for details of how to take part.

Admittance on 19 June will be strictly ticket-only with tickets going on sale at local outlets and the Farmers Market in the weeks before the event. As well as entrance to all the gardens and studios, the ticket price includes a full colour guide to the day and a much-needed cup of tea and slice of home-made cake in the lovely tea garden, where you can rest your feet and listen to live music from local players and singers. Tickets bought in advance will cost £5 for adults and children over 12, £1 for children 5-12. Entrance for children under 5 will be free. There will be a £1 supplement for tickets bought on the day.

Any surplus funds will be used by the organisers to contribute to the greening of the Queen’s Park area. Previous events have funded planting outside Queen’s Park tube station, at the police station, Queens Studios, St Eugene’s Court and Christmas lighting.

Take a look at the 2014 brochure for more information about the event two years ago:

  • QPARA appears before parliamentary Select Committee

    Palace_of_Westminster,_London_-_Feb_2007

QPARA representatives, Robin Sharp and Kevin Barrett, appeared before the  HS2 Select Committee on 26 January. We were ‘petitioners’ against HS2’s plan to build a large ventilation shaft and transformer unit on the Keniston Press and car park site by Queen’s Park station. Although HS2’s most recent plan is to switch this to the Canterbury Works site on Canterbury Road, this is not finally ‘signed up’ and has proved unpopular with community interests there. So QPARA decided to present its case against the vent being at the station site. Much impetus has come from Brent Council which has pressed strongly for this change of location so that it can go ahead with a major housing and retail development scheme. Brent’s scheme would also take in land now occupied by Cullen House, the Falcon pub and part of the gyratory road. This scheme was the subject of local exhibitions, consultations and planning approval three years ago. It now looks more likely to go ahead, but depends on final decisions following the Select Committee’s hearing.
